Project Website: https://floridasturnpike.com/turnpike-projects/featured-projects/northern-turnpike-extension/

Project Number: 14480 (Turnpike) / 449743-2 (FDOT)

Impacted Counties: Citrus, Levy, Marion, Sumter

Condemning Authority: FDOT/Florida's Turnpike

Project Description:

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is conducting an Alternative Corridor Evaluation to evaluate the extension of Florida’s Turnpike “from its northerly terminus in Wildwood to a logical and appropriate terminus as determined by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)” pursuant to Senate Bill (SB) 100 (2021), Florida Statutes.

There are currently four potential corridors under consideration. An interactive map is available to view the corridors.

You can view the Public Kickoff Meeting Videos and Documents here.

Project Timeline

In May 2019, Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 7068, creating the Multi-use Corridors of Regional Economic Significance (M-CORES) Program within the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in order to study the feasibility of three different regional corridors: The Suncoast Connector, The Northern Turnpike Connector, and The Southwest-Central Florida Connector.

A Task Force comprised of state agencies, local governments, and environmental groups was assigned to each corridor. For more than a year, the Task Forces met to discuss transportation and infrastructure projects within the corridors. On November 15, 2020, the Task Forces issued their final reports.

In the 2021 Florida Legislative Session, a bill to repeal MCORES was introduced and subsequently passed in July 2021. SB 100 directs Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise to study what is now known as the Northern Turnpike Extension.

A report summarizing the status of the Project Development and Environment Study must be submitted to the Governor, Senate President, and Speaker of the Florida House by December 31, 2022.
